Watch this video about last year’s Greenhouse Design Workshop!
At Ampersand we have found that food production is easier in a greenhouse. It requires less water, the season extension means more food to harvest, and we can finally keep out the ground squirrels and other critters that make us gardeners want to cry.
This workshop will help you determine the appropriate design for a greenhouse customized to your needs. Will it be attached to a living structure? How many windows will you need and where will they be placed? Will you purchase a kit or build your own? When should your favorite vegetables be planted and where will they thrive within the greenhouse?
After this day of exploring the many factors of greenhouse design, you will be well on your way to a productive garden in your own greenhouse at home. The focus will be on passive solar design and growing in soil in a high desert climate.
Amanda will lead us through a design process, beginning by asking foundational questions to build your customized greenhouse plan.
These elements of greenhouse design will be explored: glazing, thermal mass, insulation, ventilation, light, rain catchment, gardening techniques, and pest management.
You will learn how any greenhouse design functions through understanding heat transfer mechanisms. Participants will look at the greenhouses at Ampersand and hear about Amanda’s experience of growing in greenhouses for 25 years.
Amanda’s teaching approach is based on an intuitive understanding of heat transfer and plant needs based on experience rather than complex calculations. She believes that greenhouses are a necessary component to localizing our food production as the climate changes.
