The interns are HERE!  They are already solar cooking for themselves and creating sustainable community systems.  We love them. And we are lucky for the rains that filled up our cisterns completely just the night before their arrival.  We must be doing something right!  Join us for one of our next classes...

High Desert Gardening

Sunday May 31

Want to learn how to grow food successfully in our harsh climate?  This class covers methods to help your seedlings survive the spring winds, summer pests, and blazing sun.

Rainwater harvesting and greywater use should be the foundation of desert gardens whenever possible, so we will observe these techniques in practice at Ampersand and discuss how to get the most out of small growing areas through staged plantings, inter-cropping, and perennial plants.

We will observe appropriate Permaculture strategies and discuss details from how to prepare your soil to extending your growing season to harvesting rainwater to water harvesting earthworks.
10am to 4pm.

Earth, Straw, and Salvage Building

Join us for an overview of earth building techniques from foundation to roof.   Get some hands on experience with cob, strawbale, and earthbag.  Learn the properties of interior and exterior earthen plasters and long and chopped straw.

Learn about what load bearing walls require, and when to use insulating materials rather than thermal mass for capturing the heat of the sun and the coolness of the Earth.  We will discuss the advantages and downfalls of using salvaged materials for different parts of a structure.

We will show you the different structures we have built at Ampersand which demonstrate an integrated design with water harvesting, solar design, and making best use of local and easily acquired building materials
