Our busiest season is upon us. As we prepare for our biggest crew of interns ever, we are also preparing to include you in the program during our workshop days. We teach about Sustainable Kitchens and Solar Cooking as soon as the interns arrive so that everyone can share in the essential tasks of our off-grid life. The next weekend we teach about how we grow the food we are eating here in the high desert. Join us! And check out this video Andy made from the Blade Sharpening workshop a few weeks ago.
Sustainable Kitchens and Solar Cooking
Sunday May 24
Spend the day playing and feasting in Ampersand’s solar and sustainable outdoor kitchen. We will cook together in our favorite solar cookers and explore other self sufficient cooking and preservation methods.
Amanda will share about the range of solar cookers available, cooking techniques, appropriate cookware, canning in the solar oven, and safe temperature ranges. At the end of the day we will taste our solar creations.
Also learn about rocket stoves, solar dehydration, sprouting, and vegetable fermentation, and retained heat cooking. We will discuss how to integrate one or more of these sustainable kitchen ideas easily into your current life style. Bring your own recipe ideas and we will translate them for solar!

High Desert Gardening
Sunday May 31
Want to learn how to grow food successfully in our harsh climate? This class covers methods to help your seedlings survive the spring winds, summer pests, and blazing sun.
Rainwater harvesting and greywater use should be the foundation of desert gardens whenever possible, so we will observe these techniques in practice at Ampersand and discuss how to get the most out of small growing areas through staged plantings, inter-cropping, and perennial plants. We will observe appropriate Permaculture strategies and discuss details from how to prepare your soil to extending your growing season to harvesting rainwater to water harvesting earthworks. 10am to 4pm.
